We lost to the Jungo Bears.. .they were the worst team in the league for the first 3 months... and have since added Don August... A first round draft choice of the Astros in 1984... Don was a menber of the silver medal Olympic team in 1984... he also is a good friend who I have not had a chance to see in years. we keep in touch but have not talked in the past 2 and half years... He and I came up through the astros farm system together... at least we had a great deal of fun in spring training.. Don was a much more seasoned pitcher when he signed and was ready for AA in his first full season.. I was 3 years younger and started out in High A ball... he was then traded during the end of the 1986 season and I ended up seeing him in Portland at the end of the Pacific Coast League season.
He tells this story about a Monday night in Portland and the Toros were getting ready to leave town the next day... well on a Monday night there is not much of anything to do... So after drinking a little we decided to roam over the the red light district and see what we could drum up... well, we did not have to drive far. Before we got there a lady drove up beside us and propositioned us! Well we were two guys with hormones a ragin' and followed here to a hotel... well she was not that bad looking from sitting in here car... but when she got out.. she was about 8 months pregnant... we both sprinted back to the car and laughed all the way home... but for some reason Don has taken the liberty to add a few extras to the story..
Tony Metoyer, another astro farmhand is over here... he was signed as a third baseman out of Texas A-M and had a little trouble hitting the slider... so they turned him in to a pitcher and he made it as high a AA with the astros.. and got tired of the poor pay and might have seen the writing on the wall... He came over here 6 years ago.. and has been making over 100,000 year since... not bad for playing baseball.. It's not always the money.. but in this case it is... I really would like to pitch in the States... but no one will give me a job... I was damned it I do and Danmed if I don't in the Replacment issue... there are guys that would not cross and they are being released... on the other side are the guys that did and they are being released also because alot of them sucked to begin with... but had one last dying wish before hanging up their spikes in pro ball... alot will continue the play semi-pro ball and ciach at Jucos. and High Schools... but most will never be seen again on a ball field... I on the other hand will keep this dream alive...
I have found a wonderful new thing for my arm... the problem is that it costs about 35,000 US$... it is some new kinda laser wand... it looks like a pen with a small laser in the end and you hold a small metal bar in one hand and the doctor places the laser pen on areas of your shoulder or whatever body part ails you... he then hits a button and it pulses the laser... He said it is like laser acupuncture. All I know is it knocked ou the stiffness in my arm in 1 day... I have thrown two great bullpens the last 3 days... and will be ready to be put on the active roster on Saturday... The Doctor also said it is not allowed in the states just yet... I will probably develop cancer from this thing!!!?! but it makes my arm feel great, so bring it on!!!
Tomorrow we have a day off... but have a practice at 3:30... and I plan on taking a bus to Ping Tung and then a train to Koushung... where Tony and Don are staying this week... they want to take me out tomorrow night... Don probably thinks I still can drink and party like that night in 1986... but I am a far cry from that now... I still enjoy a beer once in a while.. .but have realized that your body does not re-cuperate as fast once you hit 30!...
I plan on keeping these reports on a daily basis and then sending then into David as soon as I can...
thanks
mallyman
